That's a great gift for someone that plays poker and im sure he will love it.As for the colors well that's totally up to you i mean green,blue,yellow,red and black are just some i have used before and as for the values of each chip again that's up to you since he plays for fun it can be anything you want like 5,10,25,50 and 100 just as an example.The chip colors will represent the values for example 5 = green,blue = 10,and black = 100 and so on as all chips of that value will be the same colors so that when you are playing you know what the values are by the colors.Usually you would have more of a smaller value and less of the highest value,not always but sometimes.Another example would be 100 chips at 5 and 10,75 chips at 25 and 50 and then 50 chips at 100.Hope that helps and like i said that's a great present.

It would cost less to just buy them, the stuff you need to make poker chips would cost more then just buying them for sure. You can buy a decent set for a couple hundred bucks. Go to www.gamblers general store .com, they have set starting at 80 bucks all the way up to a couple hundred. To make your own you would first need skill or they will come out all messed up, then you need the molds and raw materials needed, so unless you have made them before just go buy them.

What poker chips to buy?
I see on ebay that they have 500 piece sets where i can have 150 1 dollar white chips, 150 5 dollar red chips, 100 25 dollar green chips, 50 50 dolalr blue chips and 50 100 dollar black chips. However, i can customize and have any denominiation i want and the quantity.would you guys say its better to just have 1 dollar, 5 dollar and 10 dollar chips only? I really dont see the point of 25 dollar , 50 dollar and 100 dollar chips unless you play touranments.
To the people who play 1/2 no limit in home games, do you only carry 1, 5 and 10 dollar chips? I am asking this b/c when i played at the showboat a month ago and played with 200 dollars, all they gave me were 5 dollar and 1 dollar chips.
How would you guys say is the best way i divide 500 chips?

It works best to have your chip values seprated by 4 or 5 times the last chip value. An example would be my home game. I have a low buy in group and a high buy in group. The low end is a .00 buy in and we use [FAQ-ANSWER].05, [FAQ-ANSWER].25 and .00. My high end is a .00 buy in and the chips are [FAQ-ANSWER].25, .00 and .00. With the high end game the players tend to rarely use the .00 dollar chips. I have owned 8 different sets before but I have sold all but my travel set of 800 and nice home set of 500 and a couple of antique sets.
When I narrowed it down I kept the sets that had no value markings and had a 4 to 5 times separation in quantity. So if you buy on ebay find the ones that let you put the set together and chose the number of colors, usually in 25 or 50 quantity minimums. A 500 set example would be 250, 150, 50, 50. If you wanted to put a value on them I would go with .05, .25, 1.00 and 5.00. I have had a weekly Texas Hold’em live table style game every week for the past year or two and I have found that you will play a lot more low stakes poker. You will never feel like your short on chips with this set and value separation.

At Office Depot, you can pick up some Avery Round Labels. They come in many different colors and sizes (1/2", 3/4", 1-1/4", etc.)... so you should be able to find one to fit the size of your poker chips. Then just use a template for that Avery label to create a customized print job to put what you want on the labels.
