Chris Moneymaker - Professional Poker Player Review Series

Are you people aware of the word 'godfather'? Most of all are aware of this word. This story is related to the godfather of Poker Players. The one and only Chris Moneymaker was the winner of the main event at the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP). He earned his seat into the World Series of Poker main event, and rose to the top to take the .5 million first prize. It turned this poker player into an overnight celebrity. He has already traveled around the world as a poker player. His latest achievement is European Poker Championships/EPT Event Season 4 where he got the 17th place and won prize money of ,871.

His full name is Christopher Bryan Moneymaker. He was born on 21st November 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the student of Farragut High School in Farragut, Tennessee. Later he received a master's degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee. When he won a seat into the main event of the 2003 WSOP at hat time he was an accountant in Tennessee. He won through a US satellite tournament at the Poker Stars online poker card room. Previously he was totally unknown to the tournament, but on day one of the tournament professional sports handicapper Lou Diamond noticed him. He named Chris Moneymaker his 'dark horse' to win the total tournament.

This poker player's first prize was .5 million and it was his first live poker tournament. There are several interesting moments in his carrier. One of the most memorable hands was heads-up against Sam Farha, when on the river he bluffed 'all in' with King High. To change the momentum of the match Farha folded a pair of nines. Eventually Chris won the WSOP and Farha gave him a full house. This poker player has since played on the World Poker Tour, and finished in the second position at the 2004 Shooting Stars event. He earned prize money of 0,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I buy professional poker chips that are quite cheap?!?
I'm planning to buy my boyfriend a Jack Daniels poker set to play with his mates! but the only trouble is that the set only comes with 50 black and white chips, a mat, cards, playing book, and a miniture jack daniels whiskey thing! its £25, i don't have a job so i'm not really one to spend alot of money, but i know that 50 chips are not enough to play with 3-6 people! was wondering how many chips i would need, and i want them to be professional ones because my boyfriend is picky xD haha. but i don't want mega expensive ones. I am willing to spend £20 at the max =/
I want some chips that i can just buy, the chips, and not the rest of the cards, mat and what not! otherwise theres not much point getting the jack daniels one. xD but he loves jack daniels so i want to get that one!! Anyone know a place that I can either buy online, or buy in the UK?

    • ANSWER:
check out ebay, the offers are constantly changing.
second option would be to check out having them made. many of these favor stores offer custom made chips, you choose the design. maybe you can find one who has a good offer in the uk.
and actually i would just try and get the chips and leave the rest! usually cards like that aren't very good for playing with and you can't use for more than 1 or 2 nights. better off investing in some high quality playing cards like copag or kem.
just buy a bottle of JD and have you thought about crafting some stuff yourself? you can easily download pictures from JD, print them out or bring to the copy shop and then paste onto items.
seach google for jack daniel crafts and then check out the picture results.

have you thought about playing some poker yourself? girls can play too!! icon smile Professional Poker Chips

  2. QUESTION:
Movie Where Guy (John C Reily?) Learns From a Professional Con Artist to Cash in Poker chips to get more chips?
I don't remember much but I remember a guy (who I think might be John C Reily) goes to a casino and another guy teaches him all these tricks to get free stuff from a casino. He cashes in chips to buy more chips so his record shows that he's spending lots of money. He eventually gets free rooms and chips from the casino. No idea about the rest, sorry.

    • ANSWER:
Here is a site with all of John C. Reilly's movie credits.

Nothing jumps out at me that I recognize as maybe being about a con man at a casino, but I didn't click on every movie. Click around and maybe you'll see the one you're looking for.

One of my top fans (sarcastic) came on here and said the movie was called "Hard Eight". Other places list the movie sometimes as "Sydney".

I'm having to write it here because his post will be deleted due to insulting remarks.

  3. QUESTION:
Why is it that in professional poker play on t.v., both chips AND cash are used?
I watch poker on t.v. and can't seem to figure out what the need for both chips and cash are in play. hmmmm....

    • ANSWER:
It might High Stakes Poker-which is a cash game or it might be Poker After Dark on NBC which is usually a tournament and they use cash as well. The use of cash is most likely for dramatic affects-seeing thousands of dollars in cash is more exciting than seeing one chip for the same amount.

  4. QUESTION:
Can a pro poker tournament player quit with whatever chips he/she has won?
Pride and gamesmanship aside, if a professional poker player wins more than he/she initially paid to enter a given tournament prior to the final round of play, could he/she simply take his/her chips and leave with that profit, or is he/she stuck playing until the end? In other words, could he/she just take the money and run, or is he/she obligated to stick it out?

    • ANSWER:
No!!! If he/she leavs the table they will eventually be blinded out. Whenever you leave a tournament, the dealer acts as if the player is still there. They still get delt cards, but the player folds as soon as it is his/her turn.

  5. QUESTION:
Is it ok for one player to buy chips from another player during a poker game?
We have a weekly poker game, just family and friends, nothing professional. Everyone buys in by buying chips with in cash which is kept in the bank until everyone cashes in their chips at the end of the game. One player runs out of chips during the game and buys chips from another player. The seller puts the money in his pocket but the buyer then bets with those chips. It seems to me that there is no cash backing up those bets if the money is already in the sellers pocket. Am I right or wrong?

    • ANSWER:
The other player should buy the chips from the bank at first. It is ok to buy chips from other players, but that money needs to stay on the table and is considered in play especially if it is a no limit game.

  6. QUESTION:
I want to get some badass poker chips.?
I want to get some professional 11.5 g clay poker chips, but I want them to say "holdem" on them or "texas hold'em" does anyone know where i can find these online?

    • ANSWER:
11.5 g clay poker chips are not professional. Don't be fooled by the advertising. 11.5 g just means that once the steel slug that's embedded into the injection molded plastic 7g chips, the weight jumped to 11.5g.

Not that there's anything wrong with them, it's just that 11.5g chips are known to be near the cheapest and least unique chip types there are.

  8. QUESTION:
Looking for poker chips... any ideas?
I want to purchase 11.5 gram dice poker chips. I need Red, Blue, Grey, Orange, Pink, Burgundy, Light Blue, and Brown. I am looking for 500 each. I have searched online and can find all the colors at .10 each and the basic five colors (black, blue, red, green, & white) for as low as .04 each. Does anyone know of a place that sells all the standard colors for less than .10 a chip?? I did locate a place at .07 each but the shipping was ridiculous as it was more to ship than to actually buy the product.... even UPS web site had shipping at 1/5 their cost so I think they were making it up with the shipping. I would love even an outlet store since this is for home games of about 30 people and not a professional game.

    Any ideas???

    • ANSWER:
      Try Recrooms.com

I purchased 2500 chips from them and it was a great price! The shipping costs online are misleading since their website doesn't know how to add up the costs for multiple products in one order but calculates the total on the minimum cost for each item if shipped separately. But if you call them directly to place your order it is much cheaper. They quoted 0 shipping online but it was only when I called. Good luck!

  9. QUESTION:
What happens if a player leaves the "final" table before losing all his/her chips/cash?
Let's say that in a professional poker tournament, there are five (arbitrary low number) players at the "final" table, and one decides that he/she has had "enough" or otherwise needs to leave, permanently.

Would he/she be entitled to the share as the fifth remaining player (assuming that more than five players entered the tournament), or would he/she forfeit all prize money?

    • ANSWER:
I believe that their chips are anted/blinded off. If they outlast an opponent, their chips are still in play and therefore they will have 4th.

  10. QUESTION:
Chicago Poker Store - New business selling poker supplies in the Chicagoland Area is that a good idea?
I have recently opened a Poker supply store in Chicago. I'm selling (Copag Plastic cards / Poker Chip Sets / Poker Accessories) Basically anything you would need to host a poker game. The reason for starting the business is because poker supplies are heavy and shipping gets very expensive when you order online. There aren't many places in Chicago selling poker supplies. I'm selling professional 14 gram clay chips.

I have created a website: http://www.ChicagoPokerStore.com to show the products I carry.

I wanted to get some thought on if this is a good idea and also how can I market to people locally.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  11. QUESTION:
    most underrated professional poker player?
who do you guys feel is the player(or players) that don't get enough respect from the fan community(not the player community)?...i think the easy answer here is chip reese, but he has gotten more appreciation after winning the inaugural k HORSE bracelet...if i had to pick others i would say todd brunson, david singer, and minh ly, and i'm sure many others that i can't think of off the top of my head
have to agree that cassidy is a sick player especially at limit hold'em

also, nenad medic is very, very good, a name i never even thought of to put up there

    • ANSWER:
It's really hard to give one name. But sure the best example would be Chip Reese. The fan community heard about Chris Moneymaker before they heard of Reese...Kind a sad.

The fan community only know what they see on tv (for the most part) You gave some good example of names. There is so many underrated poker pro. And now we almost have to include online poker. There is some great name out there too. Now, if they're in the shadow, it's because most of them rearely play the tournaments, they play the cash games...And of course I'm talking about the "big game"
Barry Greenstein, Todd Brunson, Chau Giang, David Levi, Bobby Baldwin, Lyle Berman, John Hennigan, Jeff Lisandro, David Grey. But those are underrated, and play the big games for a long time. Now young names who play big? Scott Fischman and Joe cassidy. I bet the "fan community" don't have a clue who Joe Cassidy is, so he is underrated, But Bobby's Room is his place!

The bb calls and your heads up to a flop of:

    KS6H2C

Big Blind quickly checks. Is this a good flop for you?

Bad, If he has a King your drawing to 2 outs

Neutral, you will win about 50% of the time on this board

Good, you will win most of the time on this board

    • ANSWER:
      1. Limp and call - since you're ultra aggressive your implied odds are huge

      2. None, he has 9 outs - 2 queen's for a straight and 7 for the flush (the 5 of clubs will give the 99's a full house)

      3. No. An answer above mine explained making the correct amount of money per day to be successful (what kind of freerolls have 1st place price of K?)

      4. Call all in definitely. You have the 3rd nuts, and chances are they won't catch their straight, flush, or even full house (if they have 2 pair on flop).

      5. Well the KsQs has a 56.1% chance of making a straight, flush, better pair so I'd say the KsQs, although knowing my luck I'd lose with it every time.

      6. I dunno, him checking quickly on the flop suggests a draw, perhaps the nut flush draw, and since you've checked twice he might think you were drawing too. I'd call, since you'll still have quite a healthy stack left if you're beaten.

      7. I know what floating the flop is. I think you've made an error; in order for it to work, you must act after your opponent has, so I'd say your position factors are irrelevant, I'd say it's a tough decision because with a big stack and a tight table image, your opponent may think you're using it to your advantage and trying to steal. With the short stack and tight image, the same concept applies. I'd say a tight table image with a medium stack size.

      8. I'd say that you have 15 outs - 4 9's for the straight, 8 outs for the flush (excluding 9h) and since you have an over card, if he's not on a big pocket pair you have three more outs. You have a 34.1% chance of hitting by river, and that's if he doesn't have a bigger flush draw. It will cost you 8500 (not sure why you had the 'K' in there) to call, with the pot now at 28,300, and it will cost you 8500 to call. You have a BEP of 30%, and since you have a 34.1% chance of making what you consider a winning hand, you are getting the correct odds to call. I personally wouldn't, though.

      9. Well what kind of image do you have? I'd fold; you have an average stack AND you won't have position on a caller, and what will you do if you get raised? You'd have to fold and then you'd be known as a limper. You could turn this around, though, if you get AA or KK the next hand and you do the same; someone might put you all in thinking you'll fold.

      10. Checking quickly is usually if someone hasn't hit, or is on a draw. I'd would say, though, that this is the most common 'reverse tell', so I'd but about 2/3 of the pot sized bet out. If he calls, and then an Ace or another scare card comes, if he bets, just fold it; plenty of more opportunities.

Wow this is the longest question I've ever answered! Good luck, kid.

  13. QUESTION:
Is playing poker with these type fish like taking candy from a baby?
The fish being "sucker fish" or the "new breed" of Aspiring Poker Professionals, guys in their twenty's whose insight of the game clearly stems from watching televised poker. They seem easy to mark by their moves and attire -- sunglasses, iPods, slick style of shuffling chips, endless commentary on the game, and playing about 80% of hands they are dealt in Hold 'Em games where one should instead be throwing away their hands at that rate.

One has to wonder if they have been tricked into thinking that's how you're supposed to play by the televised tournaments, not realizing that these broadcasts are heavily edited to exclude the vast majority of hands where the table folds after one person bets. A true, real-time telecast would be unwatchably slow and boring, and the edited versions show only the actually rare contested, multi-player pots. Whenever one of these aggressive players turns up in a game, playing almost every hand, the rest of the table seems to quietly and conspiratorially go into best-ball mode, and it's often the best of the other hands against the Aspiring Pro until he eventually and inevitably goes bust. These kids also seem very easy to bully at a table if one has a bankroll - and they probably end up driving their parents "Infinity" home breaking down in tears all the while during the drive home,

It almost feels like stealing, but I look at it as financing their education.

Anyone know the type I am talking about or have a similar experience?

    • ANSWER:
The best lessons are the ones that hurt. I personally love the ultra agressive guys that would rather be dealt a 47o than pocket aces. Because to them it's all about the play. They're not there to make money, they're there to stroke their own egos. They would rather show a brilliant bluff than build a table image. I don't care if they learn or not, I'd actually prefer them to play that way until they're living in a van down by the river. Because when I play I play to make money. If I could be dealt pocket aces every hand I would. When facing a table full of these rammer jammers you need to tighten up, and accept that the variance just went up. But a tight game where you only play premium hands will chop these guys down in no time. I love it. They're predictable, which is the kiss of death in a poker game.
